A roadmap describes what you intend to do next and why, given what you know now. The "given what you know now" part is doing most of the work in that sentence — when reality changes, the roadmap should change with it.
Opportunities and challenges come at you faster than ever. You’ve got to be able to react faster, no saying “It’s not in the roadmap for this quarter”. Let the opportunity or challenge prove to you why it should be.
That version that lives in a slide deck for eighteen months without revision isn't a roadmap, it's a fossil. Treat it as a living document, or it stops being useful the day you ‘ship it’.
